Common Pests in New Hampshire

Although most insects found in or near your home are harmless to humans, that does not mean they can’t significantly damage your property! Rodents, on the other hand, can spread several different diseases through their droppings, and often trigger allergic reactions.

Dealing with pest problems quickly is important, as the situation will only get worse over time!

We provide professional, reliable, and effective pest and wildlife control solutions for:

Ants

There are many species of ants found in and around homes in New Hampshire. Noticing random piles of sawdust in your home? That may be a sign of carpenter ants, which can tunnel through wood and cause major damage to structures if left unchecked. Pavement ants, Citronella ants, Pharaoh ants, and odorous house ants don’t typically cause structural damage like carpenter ants, but they can be a nuisance and are difficult to remove.

Spiders

Spider webs are typically the first indication that you may have an overabundance of spiders around your home. You might even notice their egg sacs or see a dreaded spider on the wall!

In New Hampshire, we have a variety of spider species, some venomous and others non-venomous, including Wolf spiders, cellar spiders, Black widows, Orb weavers, common house spiders, and more. Although spiders are beneficial in nature as they help control insect and pest populations, we generally don’t like seeing them in our homes.

Wasps & Hornets

Often wasp and hornet nests are easily visible on the outside of your home; however, sometimes you’ll see them flying in and out of a crack or crevice, or even from a hole in the ground.

Cluster Flies

During the fall season, cluster or "attic" flies tend to infiltrate homes in New Hampshire, becoming a nuisance during the winter months. You might notice these sluggish flies swarming around window sills and doors, or in the attic. The best defense against cluster flies is to stop them from getting into your home in the first place!

Stink Bugs

Stink bugs are a common nuisance for New Hampshire homeowners, especially during the colder months when they begin to seek refuge indoors. Stink bugs release a pungent odor when they’re provoked or squashed, but that scent doesn’t attract other stink bugs. What does attract other stink bugs is warmth, shelter, food, and light.

Asian Lady Beetles

Late fall, when the New Hampshire weather starts to change, you may notice lady beetles appear on the sunny side of your home around windows and doors. Although lady beetles are not harmful, they are most definitely a nuisance pest, as they emit a foul odor and can leave behind yellow stains if agitated or crushed. Lady beetles are not to be confused with ladybugs, which are a helpful species in the garden.

Rodents

At Winni Pest Solutions, we offer an in-depth rodent control program, which involves eliminating the existing rodent population and preventing future infestations in your New Hampshire home. Rodents typically will enter around the foundation, under the siding, through openings around AC units, and via vents or rooflines. Common signs of a rodent infestation include: gnaw marks, droppings, nests, strange odors, and unusual pet behavior.

Squirrels

Squirrels can wreak havoc on your home: From gnawing on cables to making nests in your attic,  they leave a noticeable trail. In addition to physically damaging your home, the accumulation of squirrel feces and urine in your home can cause significant health hazards.

Bats

Bats are nocturnal creatures known to roost in attics and other dark and secluded areas during the day. That scratching and squeaking noise you’re hearing in the walls and ceilings, may be a sign of their presence. In addition to bat removal, it’s important to clean and disinfect your attic to remove any bat droppings and urine, which can pose health risks to humans and pets. Ask about our Attic Cleanouts!

Wildlife

Raccoons, porcupines, opossums, skunks, foxes, birds, rabbits, deer, and woodchucks are common species of wildlife New Hampshire residents find near, around, and sometimes in, their homes. These animals may cause damage to your home’s structure, wires, insulation, and household items as they search for food and shelter.

Unusual sounds such as scratching, scurrying, or chewing coming from your walls, attic, or crawlspace may suggest critters are present. Droppings, strong and persistent odors, and nests or burrows are clear signs of wildlife activity.
